Precision Farming
At Coosaw Farms, we believe in a philosophy of carefully nurturing our plants to make them as healthy and nutrient-rich as possible. Healthy plants enable two key outcomes: first the plant is strong enough to fight against diseases naturally. Secondly and most importantly, a healthy plant is one that is most likely to produce the highest quality fruit; fruit with a true garden-fresh taste. Our Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and Sustainability initiatives include actively rotating our crops over an expansive layout of acreage-thus reducing likelihood of poor plant health from tired, depleted soil. To manage weed control naturally, we till the soil, plant all of our watermelons on covered, raised beds, and use drip irrigation as opposed to overhead irrigation. We begin preparing our fields months before our plants ever go into the ground.
At planting through fruit set and harvesting, we take weekly plant tissue samples. This weekly analysis enables us to calculate exactly what our watermelon plants require for stamina, fortitude, and quality. For example, some weeks the developing plants may need more Calcium; other weeks they may need more Potassium or Zinc-all safe, natural, and recognizable components. You can think of it as our plants getting a customized multivitamin every week. With 100% of our watermelon fields drip-irrigated, we are able to deliver water along with these key nutrients directly to every plant's root zone with precise timing, dosage, and personal plant attention. We give our watermelons quite a luxurious life; in return, they provide us with some of the best tasting fruit nature can create and a branded taste unique to Coosaw.
State of the Art Packing
To further ensure we are giving our customers some of the highest quality watermelons on the market, we also invested in one of the world's first automated watermelon packing lines. The automation allows us to physically touch each watermelon only twice-once when it is pulled from the vines in the field and once when it is gently placed in its final shipping container. The packing line is taking care of all the other necessary processes in between, from unloading the field bins, to individually washing, drying, and labeling each melon, to precisely weighing, sorting, and counting. We also pattern-pack all of our melons. This, along with the reduced handling occasions, significantly reduces bruising and aids in product integrity through transport. Giving you a field-fresh level of quality and flavor upon delivery.
Informative, Market-Ready Packaging & Labeling Coosaw Farms has the capability to pack its melons in cartons, bins, or bags. We also label every melon we grow with a unique traceability code. By entering this code online, you can see exactly where the watermelon was harvested, on what day, the Coosaw Farms story, and more. Our labels also include the country of origin, the PLU, and a company-specific GS1 UPC.
To promote consumer awareness of watermelon's five star nutritional value, our bins proudly display the children's fit and healthy watermelon character, called J. Slice. Our bins also include key watermelon health benefit information, watermelon's official nutrition label, and recognizable health logos such as the NWPB's "Lycopene Leader" logo. The bins also include printed safety arrows on the side panels for consumer awareness of pallet corners.
We have a wonderful story to tell, from nutrition to our growing location and agricultural heritage, to flavor and quality-we try to make sure our packaging communicate the compelling reasons it's worth it to buy a Coosaw Farms watermelon! Because once you take a bite, you know!
"OMG..your watermelon are the BEST. I can say that I haven't bought any watermelon's over the last 5 years because of the taste(not good). But my niece bought one a couple of weeks ago and was very good & it was from your farm so I went and got one too and it was awesome!!!!! Thanks for the GREAT Watermelon!!!!!!!!" Jodi emailed us from Concord, NC July 6, 2010
"I just (sadly) finished the tastiest, sweetest, most juicy watermelon I have ever had courtesy of your farm. It was so good and so refreshing that I felt I had to write you and commend you. It was a large red seedless and as crisp and fresh as you could hope for. Unlike so many melons that are picked early, or that are a light pink inside, yours was a deep red and fresh. I don't know if you found a special strain of melon, had a good growing season, or were just lucky -- but this was a world class melon and your team should rightly take a bow. I intend to look for Coosaw Farms on all my produce from now on. Keep up the good work!" The Stafford family emailed us from Gaithersburg, MD July 2, 2010
"I love watermelon and I have tasted your Red Seedless Watermelons and I would like to find out where you supply your watermelons in a grocery store. I had the opportunity to taste your watermelons and thought they were delicious. thank you!" Helen emailed us on July 1, 2010
"This is a thank-you note. In the last couple of years, I have purchased "too many" watermelons that were "blah!" This season, I am most likely most responsible for the watermelon inventory at my Chantilly, VA store being "turned!" Your melons have been consistently wonderful! Thank you for whatever you do to them!!" Marge emailed us on June 30, 2010
"Dear Coosaw Farms, just want you to know that I recently purchased one of your watermelons and it was sooooo good. So difficult to find a sweet watermelon anymore, but I thoroughly enjoyed yours after coming home from a hot day in the sun. As I can't remember where I purchased it, I was hoping you could tell me who carries your produce. It is quite unusual for me to save a produce sticker so that I can find more of the same, but I did with this." Sharon emailed us on June 25, 2010
"Dear Coosaw Farms; three days ago I purchased two of your watermelons. They were THE SWEETEST, JUICIEST, most SUCCULENT watermelons I have ever had! I am addicted to them! I don't know how you do it, but you produce awesome fruit. They were so good in fact, that I called all my family and friends to tell them to go buy some too. So please, keep 'em comin'! Thanks again, from the bottom of my bloated, watermelon filled belly!" Terry, emailed us on June 7, 2010
