Reaching Out to our Local Community

Sustainable farming operations also need sustainable local communities. At Coosaw Farms we take sustainable agricultural practices seriously. We also take community outreach and social responsibility seriously. 48.6 % of our local community's children live in poverty and 56.5% of our county's children live in single parent homes (highest in the state). 18% of our youth ages 16-19 are idle (not in school or working) and our county's teen pregnancy is the highest in South Carolina.(Source: Kids Count.org)

With an understanding that today's youth will define the landscape of the future, we are working hard, here at Coosaw Farms, to help create a place for hope and deep inspiration in our local youth; strengthening and empowering them to reject the negative influences and cycles of poverty that surround them.

Three years ago, Coosaw Farms helped launch a local Boys & Girls Club in Allendale County. Known as, "The Positive Place for Kids," the Club is strongly successful, and now the forefront of positive youth development in our local community. As part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, our small rural Club hinges on five core program areas: leadership and character development, education and career development, health and life skills, the arts, and sports, fitness and recreation.

The Club serves over 200 local youth age 6 to 13. Every day after school and in the summer, the Boys & Girls Club provides a safe, enriching place for children. The mission of the Boys & Girls Club is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

Coosaw Farms is working tirelessly to help make sure today's local youth are tomorrow's leaders; tomorrow's technicians, teachers, physicians, engineers, business owners, local government officials, and employees. Everyone benefits from a healthier more sustainable local community today and tomorrow. As an integral part of Coosaw Farms' future mapping, we plan to be around for years to come and look forward to witnessing the year-after-year success of children influenced by the Boys & Girls Club who will make a positive impact on the future.
